Guardrail Types

We classify guardrails with hot dip zinc coating requirements and base materials, another way for us to divide the guardrails is according to the beam types.

Guardrail types are categorized according to their finishes surface coating. The 3 types of guardrails include galvanized steel, epoxy-coated steel, and powder-coated steel. Galvanized steel guardrails provide a durable option that can last for years but may require more maintenance than the other types. Epoxy-coated steel is a good middle-ground option; it is durable and offers good protection from weather damage as well as providing a sleek finish. Powder-coated steel is the most expensive option but it is also the most resistant to rust and wear and offers a wide variety of colours and patterns to choose from.

Guard Rail Types According to Finishes / Surface Coating:
Type I. Hot dip galvanized: 550 g/m2 (40µ)
Type II. Hot dip galvanized:1100 g/m2 (80µ) or 1200 g/m2 (85µ)
Type III. Powder coating into colors

Steel guardrails are classified according to the shape of their beams, which include "W" beam, box beam, thrie beam, double rail, and cable barrier systems. The dimensions, shapes, strength, and other features of each type of beam will depend on the manufacturer. W-Beam guardrails are the most common type of guardrail and feature an inverted-V shape that directs an impacting vehicle back onto the roadway. Box beam guardrails also feature an inverted-V shape and are often used in combination with W-beam guardrails as they are more robust. Thrie beam guardrails are heavier and taller than W-beams and can be used to protect against higher speed vehicles. Double rail guardrail systems consist of two W-beam panels that connect to the posts. Lastly, cable barriers are typically made from high-tensile steel cable that runs along a number of posts to contain an impacting vehicle. Surface coating finishes for steel guardrails typically include galvanised, painted, aluminised, and stainless steel materials.
